The E-Class is one of the most important models in the Mercedes-Benz range, so drivers can choose from a wide range of engines, including the M157 in the most powerful E63 AMG. Although the standard power output of this car is quite high, StartLine Motors can offer even more.
The M157 is a 5.5-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine. It is fitted to different models of the Mercedes-Benz AMG range, with different power outputs, although technically it is the same engine in all cars.
The M157 version of the engine mounted in the E63 AMG with the W212 body code is capable of around 560 or more than 580 (S version) horsepower, with maximum torque of 720 or 800 Nm (S version).
Engine power is transmitted to all-wheel drive via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift MTC 7 semi-automatic gearbox. It's quite robust and can handle a lot of torque, but it has its limits.
The first stage of the E63 AMG's engine power boost allows for 650 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque. This power is achieved by reprogramming the engine management computer, so no mechanical changes are required and all the car's standard systems are retained.
The next step is a second stage of power increase, which allows 670 horsepower to be achieved and a further 50 Nm to be added. In this case, the air intake system will have to be modified to increase its efficiency, and larger intercoolers will have to be installed to ensure more efficient operation of the turbines.
The M157 can achieve 730 horsepower and 1050 Nm of torque with the third stage of power boost offered by StartLine Motors. This requires more radical modifications. For example, the standard turbines are replaced by new, larger ones.
The exhaust system also needs to be replaced and a more efficient fuel injection system is installed, with a new fuel pump and more efficient injectors. Larger turbines require improved cooling, so changes are also made in this area.
This step also pushes the limits of the gearbox. That is, the manufacturer has installed an electronic limiter that prevents it from producing more than 1000 Nm of torque, so the limiter must be removed in order to maximise the increased power efficiency of the engine. It is not easy, but StartLine Motors does the job and has the key to unlocking the gearbox.
Those who want maximum power can go for the Stage 4 modification package. This allows power to be increased to 900 horsepower and torque to 1200 Nm. This result requires even more modifications.
One of the key changes is the addition of a methanol injection system. The M157 engine suffers from overheating, which can lead to serious engine failure, and methanol helps to resolve this problem and avoid major discomfort. The gearbox also requires mechanical modifications and reinforcement.
The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG W212 is not only a comfortable and convenient car, but the M157 engine fitted to it allows it to achieve high power output and excellent dynamic performance.
